Earth Defense Force 5 is a large-scale third-person action shooter developed by Sandlot and published by D3 Publisher. Set in an alternate timeline that reimagines the events of the EDF series, players become soldiers of the Earth Defense Force, an international military organization tasked with defending humanity from a sudden alien invasion. Giant insects, massive alien war machines, flying invaders, and colossal monsters descend upon Earth, pushing civilization to the brink of collapse.

As a member of the EDF, players participate in a desperate war against the invading Primers, battling across cities, military bases, underground tunnels, and devastated urban environments.
